Archbishop Jeremiasz
Eastern Orthodox bishop of Wrocław and Szczecin, President of the Polish Ecumenical Council, Archbishop Jeremiasz (Jan Anchimiuk) is 63 years old. He studied Eastern Orthodox theology in Warsaw and Zagorsk (Russia) and Protestant theology in Zurich. After 1968 he lectured in the Christian Academy of Theology in Warsaw, where after 1981 he heads the Eastern Orthodox Chair of the Holy Scripture of the New Testament, and is acting head of the Eastern Orthodox Chair of the Holy Scripture of the Old Testament. In the period 1996-2002 a rector of this Academy. In the period 1975-91 he belonged to the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches. In 1983 he received holy orders, took religious vows and became the Archbishop of Wrocław and Szczecin. Since 1982 he has been on the interdenominational team of translators working on an ecumenical translation of the Holy Scripture into Polish. Since 2002 he has been president of the Polish Ecumenical Council.
