Benedict XVI paid a visit to the former concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. "I could not fail to come here as the Pope" – admitted the Pontiff in his address. The Pope walked under the gate with the inscription "Arbeit macht frei," met with 32 former inmates of the camp, prayed in the death cell of St. Maximilian Kolbe, and in Birkenau the Pontiff prayed for the victims of the camp.
